My client is looking for an Industrial Research Landing Gear to join on them on a 9 month contract. As an Industrial R&T Engineer within the Landing Gear Research & Technology team in Filton. The job holder is responsible for developing and delivering Powder Metallurgy (PM) Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) & Direct Energy Deposition (DED) technology to the ATI funded Landing Gear research portfolio. They will support capability roadmaps which bring together multiple technologies and capabilities that are being developed in the Landing Gear perimeter for future industrial applications. The successful applicant will have the autonomy to review the current new technologies landscape, develop and deliver new opportunities for Landing Gear manufacturing and material capability development streams.
Role: Industrial Research Landing Gear Engineer
Pay: £35.00 – 40.00 per hour via Umbrella (Inside IR35)
Location: Filton (Minimum 3 Days onsite possibility WFH)
Contract: 9 months
Hours: 35 hours per week Monday – Friday (across 4.5 days (working between 7-7 at business discretion)
Security Clearance: BPSS

Job Profile
* Support evaluation phase of initial test results, provide manufacturing input for project decision making
* Provide detailed manufacturing feedback for comparison between PM HiP materials (custom 465 & 300M etc), covering machining, distortion (inc correction), managing process variabilities
* Review final measurements to determine variations in manufacturing processes
* Assuming successful test results – Support discussions for larger scale demonstrator parts, including manufacturing methods, canister sizing and liaison with the Project partners
* Knowledge capture of the process for PM HiP and machining, also DED, cold working, Heat Treats and machining
* Provide support for TRL 1 (June 2022) and closure of any actions from the review
* Compile industrial data for the criteria and provide summary and evidence to support status & statements
* Develop Links to existing APTL network and other specialist teams for PM, DED, Hard metal machining, process & treatments – Create an early recommendation of a manufacturing process for steady state manufacture of LG using DED or PM HiP – Compile a report to demonstrate the pro’s and cons of each technology (PM HiP & DED) and its relevance to LG structure – or parts of LG structure, including machining, cold working, Heat Treatments etc
* Provide support to determine and illustrate the viability of a supply base to support R70 using the above technologies
* Support VFM analysis of DED and PM HiP to determine cost effective solution for LG deployment on future A/C

Skills/Experience Required
Essential
* Technical background in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing systems engineering and experience of Landing Gear manufacturing methods, particularly: – Hard metal machining – Heat treatments – Coating technologies
* Previous experience of R&T projects, particularly engagement from project launch to TRL/MRL6
* Previous experience of developing Industrial processes during scoping and implementation phases * Basi skills to use CATIA / 3DX toolsets
* Basic SAP skills
* Previous experience of project management skills
* Fluent English negotiation level (commercial and technical)
* Analytical skills / Problem solving skills
* Strong team player with ability to work across transnational teams
* Self-starter who can review the needs of the team and drive themselves
Desirable
* Awareness of PM HiP and/or DED technologie

Education & Training

  • Essential – Strong experience in a similar role
  • Ideally degree level candidate but also happy with a candidate who is experienced
  • Role is varied supporting several teams – Landing Gear, R&T – candidate will be acting as industrial support managing industrial tasks and questions
  • Project management experience would be ideal
  • Development programs – concept through to maturity
  • Candidate needs to have experience of working with new technologies and hard metal machine experience (ideally from landing gear – using high ultra-strength steels)
  • Candidate needs to be autonomous who can work independently on complex scenarios and someone who can work under pressure
